Allergist follow-up

My mom came to visit today, and we took Nicky back to Dr. Friedman, his allergist for follow-up testing.  I can’t believe it’s already been 8 months since went the first time!  He had the same skin test as before (in his leg), but neither the nurse or I held his leg and he got a couple of scratches from the needles as he jumped.  Really, the test should have been repeated, but we could still see the results pretty clearly.  Nicky is still allergic to milk and has now developed an allergy to both egg yolks and egg whites as well.  :(

As far as his diet is concerned, nothing really changes.  We’ve been avoiding all potential allergens since we knew about the milk allergy in the first place.  He’s been able to have eggs (both yolk and white) right along, as long it’s baked in to something, like cookies or cake, because they’re cooked to a hot enough temperature to denature the protein that causes the allergy.  He’s not been allowed to have freshly cooked (for example, scrambled) eggs since they’re not cooked to that temperature.  The allergist said that there’s really no data out there to show one way or the other if complete avoidance will make the allergy go away faster or not, so it was my decision whether or not to continue the same thing we’ve been doing, which we will.

Same as last time, she said nothing will change in the next six months, so she’ll see him again sometime between six months and a year.  I had really been hoping that, even if he didn’t outgrow the milk allergy yet, we could still move on in hs diet with things like fish and freshly cooked eggs.  He’s such a good eater and I want to take advantage of that!  But, nothing new for right now, except that he can have strawberries.  Apparently, he could have had them from the beginning and the nurse gave me incorrect information; the allergist said that they give some people hives, but it’s not an allergic reaction and they’re not sure what it is.  So, he’s not necessarily more likely to have a reaction to strawberries just because of the milk and egg allergies.  We have some frozen ones, so maybe he’ll try one for dessert and see how he does tonight.

Better luck next time!
