So, my Monday morning starts out with puking, as usual. Then, I head out in 3-degree weather to the dentist. I love going to the dentist…the people in the office are SO nice; they always take good care of me and I have good teeth that don’t give me problems, so I’ve got nothing to worry about at the dentist. Not today.
Several weeks back, I noticed a growth on my upper left gum, but it didn’t (and still doesn’t) hurt and I could touch it without a problem, so I figured I’d bring it up at my next visit. I did today, and it turns out that I’ve got an abcess. I had to have an x-ray, where they put two lead aprons on me. The dentist told me that I’ve got to have a root canal and that the second trimester is the best and safest time to do it. Sometimes the pregnancy hormones can disrupt the normal bacterial flora in the mouth and make it more likely to get an infection, especially where there’s a filling. He looked over my previous x-rays, and there haven’t been any signs of problems with that area before.
He wants to put me on an antibiotic for a couple of days, so then I’m going in on Thursday morning for the procedure, which should last about an hour and a half. He told me that they’ll numb me up and that I can go back to work right afterward. Sounds easy, but I have a feeling it’s not going to be.
On the bright side, he said that the lump is a site of drainage and that it probably makes a bad taste in my mouth, which probably perpetuates the morning sickness. So, in fixing the abcess, I think he may fix the morning sickness as well…or at least I can hope so!
Maybe this will be the week that I can bid adieu to puking!
