A couple of things happened for the first time yesterday. First, I gave Nicky his own toothbrush and toothpaste and we brushed his teeth after he ate breakfast. He did really well!
Next, when Nicky was ready to go to sleep last night, he came over to me and sucked his finger, just like he always does. Chuck told him to go get his blanket, and he did! I think that might be the very first time we’ve ever asked him to do something realistic and he has done it. Not that I was surprised, but I guess I didn’t think he understood things that we say yet.
I’ve started to teach Nicky a few signs for things to help him communicate with us until he learns how to talk. He hasn’t done any of them yet, but it’s been recommended by many of the resources I’ve been reading, so I think it’s worth trying for a little while. We’ve used “milk”, “eat”, “all done”, “Mommy”, “Daddy” and “potty” (hey, it might be good to start exposing him to potty talk early!). We’ll see how it goes!

I’m very happy that we spent our vacation time together at Gruener Beach Resort! Here’s a link to the photos from the week.

We’re coming to the end of our first real family vacation week. Yes, I had to work, but only 9 am-1 pm on Monday and 7:30 am to 10 am on Wednesday. We did a little bit of work around the house in the earlier part of the week, but then we decided to start having fun.
On Thursday, we took Nicky to the Seneca Park Zoo for the very first time. It was a beautiful day, right around 70 degrees and sunny. There were lots of animals to see -
- a leopard
- rhinoceroses
- wolves
- a tiger
- hyenas
- baboons
- bald eagles
- pythons
- bullfrogs
- sea lions
- elephants
- orangutans
- lemurs
- meerkats
- alligators
I’m sure there were more that I forgot about. Nicky didn’t really pay much attention to the animals; he’s more of a people-watcher right now. It didn’t matter; Chuck and I enjoyed looking at the animals and we all had a really great time! It’s a really great trip for any age; it’s only about 20 minutes from our house, and you could do lots in just a couple of hours time or make a day of it with the nearby park.
On Friday, we went to Springdale Farm in Spencerport, also about 20 minutes away. We saw lots of animals:
- cows
- pigs (and piglets!)
- peacocks (actually, peafowl – peahens are girls; peacocks are boys)
- horses
- geese
- sheep
- goats
- hens and a rooster
And probably more that I forgot. We had a really great time and Nicky seemed to like it a ton! We’ll definitely go back there. The photos will be posted soon…

We went for Nicky’s 9-month checkup this morning. Here’s his latest stats:
Height: 29 and 3/4 inches (up 1 and 1/4 inches from his 6-month visit)
Weight: 20 pounds, 1 ounce (up 7 ounces from his 6-month visit)
His height is still in the 90th percentile whereas his weight has dropped to the 50th percentile. Nothing to worry about – now that he’s so active, he won’t be gaining weight as quickly as he has been. Also, let’s not forget that he’s Chuck’s baby!
Only one shot this time, for hepatitis B. He barely even flinched and it was over before we even knew it. He’s so good!
Off to bed. We’re hoping to visit the zoo tomorrow, so we’d better rest up.

Chuck’s on vacation this week, yay! Family fun time…
I still hadn’t been feeling well, so when Nicky woke up this morning at 5 o’clock, Chuck took care of him and got him back to sleep for another couple of hours, then again until I woke up around 8:30. After Nicky’s morning nap, we took a quick trip to the mall so that I could get a gift for Jen’s bridal shower that I can’t attend. As long as we were there, we had a coupon for JC Penney, so I got a dress for Michelle’s (Chuck’s cousin) wedding in a few weeks.
After we got home, we decided to empty out Nicky’s room and give it a good “spring cleaning”. I cleaned his window and Chuck steam cleaned the carpet.
Then, we decided to give Nicky his first haircut. He was so good! He looks like a little boy now, not my baby anymore.

For dinner, Nicky ate carrots, broccoli, and yellow squash. He still seemed hungry, so I fed him three cubes of grapes, a cube of mangoes and some rice cereal! He even tried some of our Rosemary and basalmic chicken, too. Wow!
A good ending to the day: Chuck and I weighed ourselves and we weigh almost exactly the same – only 1 pound difference! I’d never have expected it, yippee! I’m definitely feeling much better now.

Not only did Nicky have a cold (that was very short-lived), Chuck and I now have colds as well. Hopefully this will pay our dues for awhile…

I don’t know if Nicky got his first cold last night, or if he just had a bout of allergies. His nose started running after dinnertime, and by bedtime, it was like a faucet. He went to bed as usual but woke up around 9:30 all stuffy and unhappy. Chuck and I ran the vaporizer and put some Baby VapoRub on both Nicky’s chest and mine to help him breathe a little better. While he was pretty upset for about an hour, he went back to sleep for the whole night AND slept in this morning until about 8:15, late for him now! Either Chuck brought home some pollen on his clothes yesterday, or else Nicky had the shortest cold in the history of the world. Thank goodness; it was so sad listening to him try to breathe out his nose! He’s as good as new, now, though!

Nicky has been eating about 2-4 cubes of baby food for his meals lately, so I prepared one cube each of mangoes, blueberries and bananas and mixed it with about 2 tablespoonsful of rice cereal for his lunch yesterday. He did well, so I kept feeding him, making 2 more cubes of mangoes (with some rice cereal), 2 more cubes of bananas and 3 cubes of apples before he was ready to call it quits! You’d think he’d never eaten before in his life!

I forgot to add to the previous post that I weighed Nicky at the doctor’s office on Wednesday – with his diaper on, he was 20 pounds, 2 ounces.
