What does a giraffe say?

Nicky seems to think it says “moo”, maybe because of the spotting on its coat?  I looked around to find this; pretty much, they don’t make a regular noise that we can put specifically to a giraffe.

Weekend Update with Nicky Gruener

I just wanted to post a quick note about this weekend.  No matter what sleeping problems, sicknesses, and other issues seem to be happening in our lives, Nicky never ceases to amaze me.  Not only is he saying a ton of words, he did another first today.  With just a little coaching as to which pieces to put in, he completed his first puzzle…all by himself!  Jen and I didn’t help him put a single piece in.  It won’t be long before his first puzzle competition with his great uncles!  :)

Speaking of words, he says “bump” now if he bumps his head.  It’s his way of letting us know he needs his bump to be kissed.  Also, he says “nom nom nom” when he is pretend eating something.  (Check out the link on the sidebar to Lolcats if you don’t know what “nom” is)

This just in…Nicky’s bottom two molars have broken the skin.  So now he has a total of 12 teeth.  The four molars aren’t completely in yet, but they’ve all broken the skin.  Hopefully this means the worst of his teething pain is over for now.

That’s the news, good night and have a pleasant tomorrow.

The Little Gym

This morning, Stacy, Riley and Frank invited us to be their guests at The Little Gym, right around the corner from us.  We both had lots of fun!  We rang bells, rolled balls, jumped, did somersaults, rolled and hugged, hung from a bar, walked across a balance beam, and there was still time left over for Nicky to explore the gym!  It’s a great place, and they’ve got classes for Nicky’s age group once a week on Tuesday mornings, so we’re going to think about if it’s something we’d like to join.  It’s kind of expensive, but I definitely think it’s worth it because it develops so many skills.  Word of mouth is very good about The Little Gym, so even if we don’t get involved this time around, I’m sure that we will eventually!

Catching up

I finally uploaded photos from the past month or so.  Now, the first year section of Nicky’s pictures is complete (!) and we’re well into the “One to Two Years Old” section.  Please visit and enjoy photos from Nicky’s first birthday, his party and other fun things as Nicky continues to fill our hearts with joy and love!

Sudoku milestone

I’m obsessed with sudoku.  I love to do the one in the paper every morning for a simple brain workout, but I love to do harder ones that take some thinking.  I just finished Mensa Absolutely Nasty Sudoku Level 1 and I feel great about it!  Now I’m on to Level 2 and I’m already stuck on the first puzzle.  I’ve also got levels 3 and 4, so I’d better learn some new techniques for solving them.  There are plenty of places to learn them on the web; now I just have to find the time!

Also, I was so excited about watching the season premier of Desperate Housewives, it probably threw my attention off, so I’ll give it a shot again later without distractions.  Awesome start to the season, though – glad it’s back!  :)

Bridal shower

I’m looking for a place to host a bridal shower for my sister, probably at the end of February.  There are MANY great places in the Buffalo area, so we’ve picked three that we’ll choose from:

The prices are pretty comparable among the three, and they all have nice menus, so it might be a tough decision.  We’re planning the shower for the end of February, so we’ve still got some time to decide…

Nicky goes to the library

I recently found out the our local library has a story time for babies around Nicky’s age.  It started this week, so I signed him up and we went this morning.  It’s perfect for us because it’s on Friday mornings from 9:30 until 10:00 am.  Nicky usually naps around 10:30, so it works out very well.  We just came back from our first story time, and it was really great!

There were babies from about 3 months probably until about 15 months, and Nicky was definitely one of the older ones.  It was held in front of a HUGE fish tank, which all of the babies loved!  There were about 10 or so other moms and babies, and we all sat in a circle on the floor and sang songs, did rhymes, read board books, did finger plays and listened to the storyteller read a picture book.  After that, we had some playtime.  It sounds like a lot to cram into a 30-minute period, but it actually went really smoothly and was the perfect amount of time.  Nicky loved to look at the other babies and impress all of the moms with his vocabulary!  He was such a good boy; he even helped put the toys away at the end (and dump them out again right after!).

I’m really happy that we found this.  It goes for the next six weeks, and then we have to re-register, but it goes right through the school year.  Nicky loves to read, and I like to get him out to socialize with other children when we can.  Maybe he’ll be reading to the rest of the babies by the end of the school year!

Did he just say dinner?

Last night, when Chuck and I were making dinner, Nicky went to his chair and said “din-ner”!  I couldn’t believe it and asked Chuck if he heard what I did, then Nicky repeated himself.  I’ll be adding that word to the list now, wow!

Nicky’s 1-year pediatrician visit

Yes, it was a couple of weeks late, but it’s all good.  Here are Nicky’s latest stats:

  • Weight:  20 pounds, 13 ounces
  • Height: 31 inches

He’s in the 90th percentile for height and he’s dropped to the 25th for weight.  DEFINITELY Chuck’s baby, no doubt about it!  Dr. Shin said that everything looks good, that’s he’s growing well and developing well.  She was impressed by how much he knows already; she said that the average 1-year-old can say 3-5 words.  Nicky can say about 20 words!

He got three shots; two follow-up immunizations and the flu shot.  I really feel that it’s so important for everyone to get one, and Chuck and I will be getting ours soon.  Also, at one year, they test for anemia and lead poisoning, so after his shots, I took him next door to have blood drawn.  He cried so much for everything; I felt AWFUL!  But, I figure that everything got done within half an hour and he’s napping now, so it’s all done with.

Also, we got the green light to start Nicky on citrus fruits (just not too much at once to prevent diaper rash) and corn, so that’s exciting!  He’s such a good eater right now that I want to take advantage of it and expose him to as much good stuff as I can.  I really don’t want him to turn out to be a sweetness freak like I am.  I’m getting better, though, and I eating so much better now that we have healthy stuff around for Nicky.

So, to sum up, Nicky is awesome and I couldn’t be happier!  :D

New sidebar text

With the help of Wegmans Nature’s Marketplace, Nicky now can eat pretty much everything that we do, as long as we obviously don’t give him dairy of any kind.  Thanks to all kinds of soy products, Nicky can now eat just about anything, including pizza and grilled cheese sandwiches, both of which he loves.  Plus, he’s a really good eater, so he mostly does really well with anything we give him.  He doesn’t like carrots or parsnips if I serve them sliced, but he’ll still eat them pureed, so I can always do that if I want to.  His favorite foods these days are:

  • tofu
  • ham
  • pork chops
  • chicken
  • pasta
  • avocados
  • peas
  • bananas
  • applesauce
  • sweet potatoes
  • butternut squash

Now that Nicky’s really had just about everything, I’ve added a running list of words that Nicky can say along the side of the page to replace the food list.  I imagine that I’ll be updating it often, as he’s learning new things every day!
