It’s potty time!

Nicky went potty for the first time today!  I couldn’t believe it – I think I just happened to catch him at the right time.  He didn’t sit for very long at all before he pooped and peed!  Chuck wasn’t home at the time, and I was so excited that I took a picture to show him because I didn’t think he’d believe me otherwise.  (I think that photo will be kept private.)  I asked my mom what to do next, since I don’t want to push him if he’s not ready yet, and she suggested putting him on the potty after he wakes up in the morning and from naps to see if he catches on.

I put him on after his nap even though he’d already gone, but he sat well for me.  I also put him on while I ran his bath tonight, and he peed!  I could see the look of realization on his face as he went, too, which was great!  I’m not sure if this means that we’ll be full-on potty training quite yet, since he’s not even 14 months old (!), but I’ll definitely be going out this week to pick up some training pants for us to get started with.

So polite!

Nicky learned the word “please” last week.  It’s really cute when he says it – it comes out like “peese”, and he already understands the meaning.  He says it when he wants something pretty regularly, which I love!  I’m so glad he’s developing nice manners!

Our week

Nicky and I survived our week while Chuck was in Columbus!  We were busy, but not too much so.

Monday, I had to work 5-9, so Nicky went next door with Katie, Chris and Rylie.  He did really well, especially considering that it was the first time he’d ever been away from either Chuck or I for that long.  He had a great time playing with Katie while Rylie took a nap, then he ate a great dinner and surfed the net with Katie while waiting for me to come home.  He must have been on overdrive, because I put him to bed by 9:30 and he was awake until after 10.  He slept well, though, and a little bit late the next day.

On Tuesday, my mom came to visit.  We went to the Christmas Tree Shops and then Ulta Beauty, then came home for lunch.  Nicky took a good nap while my mom and I looked around the Internet for Christmas presents and I set up the rocking chair that she bought for him.  He woke up just in time to have his first iChat with his cousin Abbie.  It was very cute; they both kept pointing at the computer monitors and saying, “baby”.  My mom stayed overnight, and we went to Target on Wednesday before she went back home.

Yesterday, Thursday, Margaret and Parker came over to play.  I made these pumpkin chocolate chip cookies for everyone to enjoy, and they did!  Nicky’s never had chocolate before, and it was a hit with him!  He also said his first “sentence” – “Sticks, please!”.  (He calls these Keebler crackers “sticks”.)  I can’t believe he put together two separate thoughts, WOW!  Later, he added a new word to his already long list, when I put a barette in my hair.  He kept saying “brrette” and it was really cute!

This morning, we went to the library.  We had a very nice time, just like always.  Nicky loves to read the books and look at all the other babies.

We used iChat to video conference with Chuck every day, at least once.  It was really great and definitely felt good to be so closely in touch with each other.  Every time we went upstairs, Nicky said “Dada”, and if I said “Daddy”, he got all excited and ran right into the computer room.  While that was really sweet, I’m glad that he’ll be able to kiss his daddy good night tonight.  He’s been up a little bit late every night this week, so I think I’ll try to keep him up to see Chuck when he gets home.

Chuck should be home around 9pm.  He finished taking the second part of the certification exam (over 2 hours early!) and is on his way home now.  He already knows that he passed the first part and is pretty sure he passed the second part – yay, Chuck!  He said that traffic in Columbus is really horrible and that he might be stuck in the city for awhile, but he should be home in about 6 hours.  As long as he’s safe, I don’t care how long it takes.  He’s been through much worse, like when he drove through the snowstorm from Washington, D.C. when I was pregnant with Nicky.  This should be cake for him!

Even though we both missed Chuck so much, we really had a great week together.  Every day, Nicky is growing and learning so much.  It is such a joy to watch it all happen!

He’s waking up from his nap now, so I think we’ll take a quick run to Wegmans to pick up some things before Chuck gets home.

RHCE in Columbus

This week, I’ll be in Columbus, Ohio in hopes of becoming a Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE).  This certification is highly regarded and is only achieved by passing a five-and-a-half-hour hands-on exam.  Jen and Nicky will be dropping me off at the airport to pick up the rental car around noon tomorrow.  From there I drive straight to my hotel.  The training location is the building next door to the hotel which will make mornings really easy since I won’t have to fight traffic or parking.

As you might have guessed, I chose Columbus as the training location as a way to get RIT to pay for me to visit with Todd, Marcie, and Abbie.  RIT was going to pay for the training no matter what, and since the closest locations were Toronto, Boston, or Columbus, I chose Columbus.  Even though Jen and Nicky will be staying home, I will be bringing the MacBook Pro with.  This way Jen and Nicky will be able to video chat with those of us in Columbus.

I’ve been wanting to have some sort of certification that says I’m good at what I do with computers, specifically Linux, for a while now.  This is the perfect opportunity and I am really looking forward to it.  In the same breath, I am going to miss my wife and son like crazy.  It’s only for 6 days and we’ll be sure to talk lots via phone and video chat.  I just know that Nicky is doing amazing things practically daily that I don’t want to miss.  However, this was my choice and it’s the right thing to do in order to further my career.

For my mom and grandma

Bye-bye bottles!

Nicky hasn’t taken a bottle, even at bedtime, in over two weeks now, so it’s time to put them away!  I nurse him every night except for Mondays (when I work) and then Chuck gives him a sippy cup with a little bit of soymilk in it.  I certainly can make use for the extra cabinet space in the kitchen, so away they go!

Poll results

Here are some very interesting results to a poll on BabyCenter.com.  Nicky has somewhere around 50 words right now, WOW!  He’s definitely my kid…

New schedule

I made an executive decision on Friday; Nicky’s going to start having just one naptime.  He’s never been a great napper to begin with; sometimes, I could get two naps from him, but it’s been pretty irregular lately.  The past week, he’s been skipping his afternoon nap, so I thought we should just try to keep him up later in the morning, give him lunch a little bit earlier than usual, then put him down for only an early afternoon nap.  So far, it’s been going well.  It’s going to take a bit of adjusting on both of our parts because of the schedule change, but I think it’s going to work well for us.

Strategy

Nicky has a strategy when he plays with Keanu:  he gets out two toys and as soon as Keanu grabs one, he entices him with the other and simply rotates between them so that Keanu will always have something to get from him.  He loves to grab a toy and then run into Chuck’s or my lap and wait for Keanu to come get it.  It’s very cute to watch them play together now!

Pitter patter

It’s true; their tiny feet do make a pitter-patter noise.  It’s also true that it’s a beautiful sound!
