A travelling adventure

We had some things to take to our parents before Christmas, so today we decided to drive to Buffalo and drop it off. Thank goodness it took longer than planned (big surprise) for us to get out the door because there was a huge accident on the Thruway, backing up traffic for several miles before they eventually just closed it between Batavia and Pembroke.

So, we moved less than a mile in about three hours’ time. That was QUITE the adventure with a two-year-old and an almost-twelve-week-old! Thankfully, Ryan slept for about the first two hours, but when he woke up, he was hungry! Chuck pulled him out of his carseat and I nursed him in the front seat while we sat there with the car off. We had just enough time to change his diaper on my lap (!) before traffic started up again, and we were rerouted back to Batavia. We finally arrived after almost FIVE HOURS of travel – we could have gone to visit Marcie in Columbus for that!

Chuck and I are beyond blessed with our family – not only are we all safe, most importantly, but Nicky and Ryan were such good little boys! Thankfully, we had plenty of food and water in the car, and we also had our iPhones and plenty of things to keep Nicky occupied on our long trip. I think that if we can get through this, we can get through lots of things!

We're famous!

Yes, I’m a freak…when Nicky naps, I watch TV with the volume off and closed captioning on.  I caught something pretty funny way back when Nicky was a baby and took a photo.  Chuck posted the photo to FAIL Blog last week and it did very well!  Here’s the link:

Happy Thanksgiving!

We had a really wonderful holiday with so much to be thankful for!  We are very, very blessed to have such beautiful family in so many ways – when we asked Nicky what he’s thankful for, his answer was, “You’re thankful for Ryan!” (he refers to himself as “you”).  Life doesn’t get any better than this.  :)

I made this recipe for sweet potatoes to bring with us to Grandma Karen and Grandpa Ken’s house – yum, yum, YUM!  Totally making it again.

Giant baby

Ryan had his 2-month pediatrician visit this morning.  Dr. Shin said that everything looks great, yay!  Our big boy is now 14 pounds and 24 inches long.  He had 4 shots plus his Rotovirus vaccine at the end; he’s been a little bit out of sorts ever since, but not too bad.  Hopefully, he’ll sleep it off tonight so that his first Thanksgiving will be a great one!

A good, big boy!

Ryan is such a great addition to our family; it’s like he’s always been here.  Everyone’s adjusting well to him, especially Nicky.  He loves to hold Ryan every day and help with things Ryan needs.  We couldn’t feel happier!

Ryan still only gets up once in the night to eat, and that’s been pushed later and later; he gets up around 6am now and then he’ll go back to sleep until 8 or 9am!  It won’t be long until he’s sleeping in his own room.  There’s no sense in moving him while we still get up in the night, but I don’ think it’ll be much longer.

Ryan is definitely a good baby.  Nicky hardly cried when he was little, and Ryan cries even less.  He pretty much only cries if he needs something, like a diaper change or food.

He’s huge, now, too.  We’ll have him weighed at his 2-month (!) pediatrician visit on Wednesday, but I bet he’s already to 14 pounds.  He’s been in 6-month clothing for about two weeks already!  He’s also in the larger-sized swaddle blankets at night.

Ryan is also more awake these days.  He still sleeps a lot, but he’s definitely got more time where he’ll play and smile.  He’s very content just laying either on his back or his tummy on a blanket and looking around.  He’s starting to enjoy the play gym a little bit more now; I think it was too much stimulation at first.  Now, he likes to hear me sing to him and he does well when we read books with Nicky.

My babies are growing so quickly.  Every day, I can’t believe how blessed we are to have such beautiful and healthy children!

Nicky's favorite things

Nicky has a few things that he really can’t get enough of these days; I wanted to make sure that we document his latest obsessions.

  • Uno (for preschoolers)
  • SpongeBob Memory
  • his yellow SpongeBob t-shirt
  • his fun socks (snowmen, chicks, and tie-dyed)
  • the Mommy book
  • The Giving Tree
  • carrots
  • marshmallows
  • his red jogging pants
  • Where the Sidewalk Ends (particularly, Ickle Pickle Me, Tickle Me Too)

Ryan’s 5-week check-up

Today was the first time I had to take both boys out by myself.  It wasn’t bad at all!  I went over the rules with Nicky before we left and he was very good.

Our big boy is now 12 pounds and 23 and 1/2 inches long!  I checked back at Nicky’s stats for this visit and he was 12 pounds 14 ounces.  Dr. Shin was happy to see the weight gain – he’s clearly getting enough to eat!  :)

At the end of the appointment, Ryan had the second vaccine in the Hepatitis B series.  He took it like a champ – he cried until I picked him up and then he was fine.  We came home and he ate; he’s pretty much been sleeping ever since, but I seem to remember Nicky doing the same thing when he had his shots early on.

Also, he can probably use the rest because he’s been awake lots this week.  Not at night (he still gets up only once, anywhere between 4 and 6 am), but during the day he’s been awake for more than just eating and pooping.  I’m glad because I like to watch the boys interact with each other.  Nicky loves to hold Ryan on the Boppy and to hold Ryan’s hand.  Ryan likes to have his feet played with, so if he’s fussing, I’ll have Nicky play with his feet and he’ll calm down.

We are really blessed to have such healthy and happy little boys!

Birth announcements

Last Monday, we took Ryan and Nicky to JC Penney to have photos taken for Ryan’s birth announcements.  Here are the photos – they turned out beautifully!

Suspicions confirmed

Ryan measured 22 and 1/2 inches at birth; Chuck didn’t think it was right because the tape broke while the nurse was measuring him and she put it back together (maybe overlapping) before coming up with her measurement.  He wanted to ask her to remeasure but didn’t want to be rude.  This morning, at the Ryan’s 2-week well-child checkup, the nurse measured him at 21 and 1/2 inches.  He probably didn’t shrink; I guess he wasn’t as long as we’d thought at birth, but we’ll never know for sure.

As a reminder, Ryan was 8 pounds, 12 ounces at birth and 8 pounds, 3 ounces when we left the hospital.  It usually takes two weeks for babies to get back to the original birth weight and at his visit last week, he was already up to 8 pounds, 9 ounces.  This morning, he weighed in at 10 pounds even!  What a big boy!  I had been wondering about how often he eats (every 2-3 hours) because Nicky ate every 1-2 hours for a really long time.  Apparently, Ryan is quite efficient at eating and doing very well.  I’m so proud!  :)
