Nicky’s always had a really great vocabulary, and he’s been really good at pronouncing most words. For a while, he’s said “eph-e-ment” instead of elephant and I kept telling Chuck not to correct him because it’s so sweet and he’d figure it out on his own eventually. He sure did; those moments are gone and he says elephant clear as day now!
He does, however, say “pasketti” instead of spaghetti. I’ll enjoy it while it lasts…

We haven’t had a chance to blog about our new family yet – so far, we’re doing well! Nicky is the best big brother anyone could ask for! He loves Ryan; he loves to check on him and look at him and hold him and kiss him. It’s really, really sweet to watch.
Chuck and I have been pleasantly surprised because the first night, Ryan was up just about every hour for a feeding. We started to get nervous that we wouldn’t be able to handle the lack of sleep. After that, though, he was up twice a night, and for the past four or five nights, he’s only been up once, later every time. Last night, we all slept from midnight to about 5am and then again until 9am, yay! It’s not quite as quickly as Nicky did that, but we’re still pretty darn lucky.
We’ve been trying to take lots of photos with the new camera and update the photo site, so check periodically to see our two little blessings!

I made this very easy recipe today; I might make it again but without the coffee.

Ryan has his own gruener.us email address, ryan@gruener.us, along with the rest of the family. (nick@gruener.us, keanu@gruener.us, jen@gruener.us, chuck@gruener.us) If anyone would like to send on a message, we’ll archive it for him to read when he’s able to.
In addition, if anyone else out there on the Internet would like a gruener.us email address, full account or just a forwarding address, I’d be happy to create it for you. Just send me an email.

On Tuesday afternoon at 12:31, we welcomed our second son, Ryan Thomas Gruener into the world! He weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces and was a whopping 22 and 1/2 inches long! (Cooked almost three weeks longer, Nicky was 9 pounds, 9 ounces and 21 and 1/4 inches long!) Here is a link to his folder on our photo site; we’ll be adding photos as we can.

So, the C-section was scheduled for 9:30 this morning. It’s now 10am and I’m back in my room, still growing the baby. Turns out a woman in labor had a prolapsed cord, meaning that the umbilical cord came out before the baby, so she needed my spot in the OR. Fine by me! Now we just wait. Since they sent us back to our room, I’m assuming it’ll be awhile. That’s okay, there’s wireless and TV, so Chuck and I are both entertained. I’ve got my IV in place and had my pre-surgery meds and consultations, so I’m all ready whenever they are. More news from the other side…

Yesterday and today, I made it my focus to make some meals that had enough leftovers to freeze for while I’m in the hospital and for a while after. I made the the zucchini, ham and potato soup yesterday along with the butternut squash and pear soup from the Wegmans Menu magazine. Today, I was a little bit busier; I made:
We’re just about out of room in the freezer, so I think I’ve got enough to last us for a little bit. Chuck plans to take the next three weeks off for a paternity leave, so I’m sure we’ll have plenty of time to prepare dinners during that time, but sometimes it’s just nice to have a quick meal to pop in the microwave. I feel accomplished now!

I made this recipe for zucchini, potato and ham soup from Rachel Ray and it was just delicious! I froze our leftovers and will definitely make it again!

I found this recipe for a vegan alfredo sauce and tried it out, since I had all of the ingredients at home. It was very rich but very good; we mixed it with small pasta shells, grilled chicken strips and peas. I’ll definitely make this one again.

Six days to go! Chuck, Nick and I all went to see Dr. Gabel this morning. There’s been no progress as far as labor goes, which is a good thing. Everything is set for Tuesday morning, and we even got a later time – 9:30am! We were originally scheduled for 7:30am, but we have to be at the hospital 2 hours before and I was concerned about being able to say good-bye to Nicky in the morning before we leave. Now, I can do that; we’ll just get him up a little bit early to let him know that it’s time for us to go to the hospital.
Dr. Gabel does not think this baby is as big as Nicky was. In fact, his guess is 8 pounds, 4 ounces when the baby is born. A peanut, really, compared to Nicky’s 9 pounds, 9 ounces!
Now, we wait. And finish getting things together…washing the swaddling blankets, some baby nightgowns and making some freezer meals for everyone while I’m in the hospital. It won’t be long!
